This is a collection of various resources and information for building a DIY, single-wheel board. A little history as to how I came into all of this info... I bought my Onewheel Pint back in June 2020. After learning the range is wanting, and there was mods available to extend it, I ordered the R3D Customs "X2R Mod" in early fall. The mod extends the range by adding an additional battery, but requires opening both the battery and controller enclosures. Doing so voids the 1 year warranty with Future Motion. The mod functioned without issue for a couple months, but after a particularly muddy ride, I took the Pint apart to clean it and decided to modify my X2R wiring while I had it disassembled. I was careless while I had the enclosures open and bridged the high voltage. This blew the IC in the U1 position of the BMS.

So far, thanks to help from the Floatwheel discord, I have the VESC tool turning the motor.

Floatwheel — Things I Wished I Knew Before I Started

  • Tuning can happen over bluetooth with the Vesc Tool App (Android only): Get the APK here
  • Tonys calibration video is good for initial setup, but you still need to fine-tune the pitch center in the Vesc Tool
  • It's easy to overlook footpads actually working due to the realtime voltage not displaying prominently
  • Finally, the Discord is full of helpful DIYers:
    • TZDKB — one of the first with a working Floatwheel
    • Mario Contino — maybe the first with a working Floatwheel state-side?
    • Danilo Lattaro — threw together some very useful 3D models
    • AM3R0/Adrian — might have a similar Pint horror story as I; has knowledge of converting a Pint to Vesc
    • nachiswichis — pointed out possibility on some BMS's being able to change the series count (13s→12s). turns out the 13s BMS I picked up is not one of those, however.
